If you are a caregiver for a loved one who can't walk very far but would love to get out of the house, a lightweight transport chair might be what you're looking for. The smaller rear wheels on a transport chair make it light enough to easily lift into the trunk or back seat of a vehicle. Some light weight transport chairs weigh as little as 19 pounds. Remove the leg rests if you want to make it even lighter.
The transport wheelchair folds for compact storage and travel, and on some models, the backrest folds for an even smaller size. The rear wheels are usually 6 or 8 inches in diameter. The 6 inch wheels are best for indoor use and smooth pavement. For riding over rougher outdoor terrain, look for 8 inch wheels or oversized rear wheels. The larger the wheels, the smoother the ride will be.
Don't overlook the armrest style, either. Removable and flip-back armrests make it easier to push the transport wheelchair under a table at the restaurant or a service desk at the bank. Transfers are a breeze when you take off or flip back the arms. For more arm support, choose full-length armrests; for getting in closer to desks or tables without removing the arms, choose desk-length armrests.
